Two titles for the BMW family

An overview of the weekend’s racing action

World-class weekend for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport community: Pekka Päivärinta and Kirsi Kainulainen rode to the historic title in the FIM Sidecar World Championship (SWC) in Donington. Taylor Mackenzie was also victorious at the same track and claimed the second title win of the weekend. He was crowned champion in the Superstock class of the British Superbike Championship (BSB STK) – in a race in which the BMW S 1000 RR got a one-two-three result. And as if that wasn’t enough: The BMW racers celebrated further success at the weekend. We have produced a compact summary of all of the results.

The ninth and final race of the FIM Sidecar World Championship in Donington (GB) turned into a gripping finale in the fight for the title. The Finnish duo Pekka Päivarinta/Kirsi Kainulainen (44-Racing) rode into second place in their sidecar powered by a BMW S 1000 RR engine, thereby clinching the World Champion title with a lead of 18 points (for more information, see the separate news article).

The weekend of champions was rounded off by Taylor Mackenzie: In Donington, in the penultimate race of the season, he clinched the title in the Superstock class of the British Superbike Championship. Mackenzie celebrate the sixth win of the season on his BMW S 1000 RR of Buildbase BMW Motorrad. The RR riders were dominant once again in this race, the eleventh of the year. With Mackenzie in first place, Michael Rutter (Bathams SMT) in second place and Ian Hutchinson (Tyco BMW) in third place, BMW got a one-two-three result; additionally, no fewer than nine RRs crossed the finish line in the top ten positions. There was also a podium position in the Superbike class (BSB SBK): Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW) clinched third place in the second of the two races in that class.

The MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) headed to the Lausitzring after a long summer break. In the race on Saturday, Jordi Torres (Althea BMW Racing Team) finished in fourth place for the third time this season. He missed out on the podium by less than a second. Heavy rain and poor visibility meant that the race on Sunday started with a 45-minute delay. There were numerous falls on the extremely slippery track. Joshua Brookes on his Milwaukee BMW S 1000 RR finished seventh in these treacherous conditions, which saw him achieve his best result to date in the WorldSBK.

The FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) kicked off the 2016/17 season with the legendary 24-hour race "Bol d’Or" in Le Castellet. The Völpker NRT48 by Schubert-Motors team achieved a strong tenth place in the overall standings and fourth place in the Superstock class. The #48 BMW S 1000 RR was ridden by Christof Höfer, Christopher Kemmer and Florian Galotte. The Lukoil BMW Motorrad CSEU team (Julian Mayer, Roland Resch, Marin Ivanov) also reached the finish line, in 29th place.

The FIM Superstock 1000 Cup (STK1000) has also returned from its break and held its sixth race of the season at the Lausitzring. The race took place in treacherous rain. The best-place BMW rider was Luca Vitali (Team 2R Racing) in eighth.

Full programme at the Lausitzring: The Superbike IDM / International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) was also in action there at the weekend. The BMW S 1000 RR claimed two podium positions in difficult conditions. In the first race, Pepijn Bijsterbosch (Van Zon-Remeha-BMW) finished third in the Superstock class (IDM STK). In race two, Lucy Glöckner (MCA) climbed onto the podium in third place in this class.

The third round of the 2016 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSC) was held at Sepang at the weekend. In the Superbike class (MSC SBK), Colin Butler (AP Racing) finished in tenth and fifth position. Linggam Rammoo was eighth in both races. In the Superstock class (MSC STK) , the best BMW result was achieved by Nasarudin Mat Yusop (BMW Malaysia), finishing fifth in race two.
