Brazilian title hunter

Interview with Danilo Lewis

“I really am living the dream and I hope that I never wake up“ – that is how Danilo Lewis describes his first season as a member of the global BMW Motorrad Motorsport family. The 23-year-old Brazilian is on the hunt for titles in South America with the BMW S 1000 RR.

Lewis is on the road to success with the TecFil Racing Team in the SuperBike Series Brasil. Four races have already been completed this season. He has already celebrated three wins in a row and last weekend, a second-place finish (where he was only beaten into second place by 0.043 seconds) consolidated his overall lead in the championship.

Lewis first started out in motorsport at the age of 11. He first competed in motocross races, before moving on to Supermoto at 14. He claimed the championship title in the Junior class here in 2005 and 2006. He then progressed to the SuperBike Series Brasil, via the 125 ccm, 250 ccm and 600 ccm categories.

In this interview, Lewis reveals more about himself and explains what life is like away from the race track.

A motorsport-mad family

Question: “Danilo, when did your passion for motorcycle racing start?”

Danilo Lewis: “It came through my father who has always been enthusiastic about bikes and has a motorcycle workshop. So I have been involved with speed and bikes since my early childhood. My father always asked me if I wanted to ride bikes, but until I was 11 years old I had no interest. But one day I decided to give it a try and since then I could not keep my fingers off bikes.”

Question: “You had a brilliant season so far in the SuperBike Series Brasil. What is the key to your success? Your talent? The bike? The team?”

Lewis: “Yes, it is a great season so far. I believe it is the overall package of me as a rider, the BMW S 1000 RR and the team. All works perfectly together. However, the season is still long and a lot can happen. But we will continue to give it all and try to win the 2016 title in the SuperBike Series Brasil.”

"For me, the BMW S 1000 RR is the perfect bike”

Question: “How do you like the BMW S 1000 RR?”

Lewis: “For me, it is a perfect bike. I have raced bikes of several brands, but without any doubt the BMW S 1000 RR is the best bike on the market. I am really at one with it and this enables me to ride at the limit in the highest Brazilian motorcycle championship.”

Question: “You are also among the highest placed riders in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy. How do you like this worldwide competition for BMW riders? And do you feel a part of the global BMW racing family?”

Lewis: “It is really great to compete for a title with the best riders in the world, who also race with the best bike – the BMW, of course! It is my first season with the BMW S 1000 RR, and I receive a lot of support from BMW in Brazil and in Germany. I am really living a dream and I never want to wake up!”

Question: “How would you describe yourself as a rider? And as a person?”

Lewis: “As a rider I am very focused and dedicated. I would consider myself as cool, technical and aggressive, when it is required. As a person I am easy to handle, I love to treat my friends and everybody well. I am attentive and curious and I have no problem in always making new friends.”

Question: “What is your occupation when you are not racing?”

Lewis: “I help in my father’s and my family’s motorcycle workshop in our hometown Osasco near São Paulo. I love doing that and learning all about bikes.”

The woman at his side

Question: “Your girlfriend Paloma is with you nearly at every race. How important is her support for you?”

Lewis: “It is always good to have the person you love at your side. She supports me in everything, helps me with my physical training, takes care about my food and that I take a rest at the right time. When she can’t come to my races, we talk on the phone whenever it is possible. We have a weekend relationship as she lives with her parents and family in a city 100 kilometres away from São Paulo. But we see each other every weekend.”

Question: “How did you two meet?”

Lewis: “We first met in October 2011 at the motorcycle fair Salão Duas Rodas, where she asked me for an autograph. A few months later, in January 2012, she came with her family to watch the ‘500 Miles of Interlagos’. She asked to take a picture with me and we talked a lot. After this race, we stayed in contact and arranged a date. This was, when it all started. We have been a couple since the 29th January 2012.”

Question: “Do you have any role models?”

Lewis: “I admire many riders in the world, but my role models are my fellow countrymen Alex Barros and Ayrton Senna as well as Valentino Rossi.”

Question: “Tell us about the private Danilo Lewis: what do you do in your free time when you are not racing, training or working in the workshop?”

Lewis: “I love to play video games, mostly motorcycle games. I like to watch movies and go to the cinema. As I love all kinds of animals, I enjoy playing with my dogs and cats. I also go shopping and I go to church whenever it is possible.”

Question: “Are you superstitious?”

Lewis: “Yes, since I was a child I have been superstitious. For example, I never walk under ladders. And I am finishing everything with the right side. For example, when I put on my boots, I first put the left one on and finish with the right boot.”

Aiming for the title

Question: “What is your goal for the rest of the season?”

Lewis: “The goal for this season is to keep focused and dedicated in order to win the title in the most important Brazilian championship and I want claim the best possible result in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy.”

Question: “And what do you want to still achieve in your racing career?”

Lewis: “I want to race in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup or some other big championships outside of Brazil. I am trying to further develop as a rider and my dream is to make it to MotoGP or to the Superbike World Championship – and then I dream of becoming world champion!”
