Successes in Croatia

An overview of the weekend’s race action

In Misano in Italy, the spectators witnessed eventful races in the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup (STK1000). The FIM Sidecar World Championship (SWC) and the Alpe Adria Road Racing Championship (AARR) stopped off in Rijeka in Croatia – where the BMW Motorrad Motorsport racers picked up more wins and podium positions.

The eighth race weekend of the 2016 World Superbike Championship was held at the “Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli”. The Althea BMW Racing Team delivered another strong performance. Spaniard Jordi Torres finished in fifth and seventh on his BMW S 1000 RR. Joshua Brookes of the Milwaukee BMW team picked up 11th and 14th places in Misano. His team-mate Karel Abraham retired in the first race and finished 15th in race two.

Althea BMW rider Markus Reiterberger’s impressive weekend came to an unfortunate end. The young Bavarian rode the second-fastest time of the day on Friday. In the first race on Sunday, he got his second-best result of the season when he finished in sixth place. But he had a heavy fall in the chaos of the first lap in race two, which caused Reiterberger to pick up a compression fracture to one of his thoracic vertebra. He now has to rest for a few weeks and is unable to compete in the next round in Laguna Seca, California (8th to 10th July). Althea BMW Superstock rider Raffaele De Rosa will stand in for Reiterberger. The Italian tested the Superbike machine on Monday during the WorldSBK test in Misano.

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, De Rosa battled for his third win of the season in Misano. He led the field for much of the race, but was unable to shake off his rival Leandro Mercado. The duel between the two of them culminated in a wheel-to-wheel battle on the final lap – which came to an unfortunate end. De Rosa fell, dragging Mercado with him to the ground. De Rosa was able to finish the race, but had to make do with 19th. However, the BMW rider still leads the championship standings with an advantage of five points.

The FIM Sidecar World Championship held its second race weekend of the season, at the “Automotodrom Grobnik” near the Croatian seaport of Rijeka. The schedule included the sprint race on Saturday and the gold race on Sunday. The Finnish BMW duo Pekka Päivärinta/Kirsi Kainulainen (44-Racing) finished on the podium in both races: They were third on Saturday and second on Sunday. Päivärinta/Kainulainen are in second place in the championship standings.

The Alpe Adria Road Racing Championship also stopped off in Rijeka at the weekend. In the Superbike class (AARR SBK), Lukáš Pešek (BMW Motorrad CSEU) bagged a spot on the podium in both races. The Czech finished third in one race and second in the other.

In the Superstock class (AARR STK), the reigning champion Michal Prášek (Rohac and Fejta motor racing team) continued his winning streak. He celebrated a double victory, which saw him further extend his lead in the championship. In addition, he took the lead in the 2016 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy. Prášek has won five of the six races held so far this season.
