Victory and podiums in Italy, strong start to the season for BMW in Spain

Perotti & Corradi with victory and a podium in Misano, Silva & Rivas strong in Portimão

Two of the most important national championships in Europe started over the weekend. In Misano, Italy, the first round of the Italian Superbike Championship (CIV) was disputed and Fabrizio Perotti won the opening race of the year, as Alessio Corradi rode to second place. Portimão, on the Algarve coast in Portugal, hosted Round 1 of the FIM CEV Superbike European Championship (CEV) where two races were run. BMW riders Iván Silva and Daniel Rivas finished fourth and fifth respectively in both races, just missing out on the podium each time.

Perotti wins Race 1, Corradi on the podium in the second

It was a successful first round for the BMW Motorrad riders in the Italian Superbike Championship (CIV), which was held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. BMW S 1000 RR rider Fabrizio Perotti of Team Tutapista secured second place on the grid for both races, while fellow BMW rider Alessio Corradi of the DMR Racing Team started from sixth.

Perotti was second until the final lap before overtaking MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro, who encountered technical issues. The pathway to victory was cleared for Perotti, as Denni Schiavoni of the 2R Racing Team made it, two BMW S 1000 RR machines inside the top five while Corradi fell.

“I had a very fast pace and I tried to keep up with Pirro,” said Perotti after race one. “In the end he had a good head start. His technical problem then played into my hands, and I was able to take an unexpected victory.”

In the second race DMR Racing rider Alessio Corradi took a BMW S 1000 RR onto the CIV podium for a second time, when he finished in second position. His team-mate Luca Oppedisano took eighth place. Race one winner Perotti encountered problems in race two, after he’d been on course for a podium finish. A technical issue forced him into the gravel trap, and he recovered to place 14th.

“I’m really sorry about the crash in race one,” said Corradi on Sunday. “I felt the front going and I couldn’t save it. That’s why I was so motivated for the second race. I waited to attack so as not to take any risks and make any mistakes. When I was in second I upped the pace again, and I’m very happy with second place.”

Silva and Rivas just miss out on podium as season starts

Iván Silva (Team Targobank Motorsport) and Daniel Rivas (Boxmotos.com Easyrace SBK Team) finished the opening two races of the FIM CEV Superbike European Championship (CEV) at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal in fourth and fifth positions respectively after a hard fight. In the privateer standings, Finnish rider Eeki Kuparinen (Motomarket Racing) was just 0.74 seconds off top spot and category winner Piere Texier, and in the second race Kuparinen was fourth in the privateer rankings.

Silva didn’t get off to a great start in race one and had to mount a spectacular comeback, eventually taking fourth after a lengthy battle with Rivas. Rivas, who came up from sixth on the grid, put Silva under pressure again in the second race. The former MotoGP rider was able to hold him off, but only just with a margin of 0.157 seconds separating them at the chequered flag.

“A difficult weekend in many ways,” said Silva. “We had to work out the set-up in a single day, and we kind of ran out of time. I made a few mistakes in the first race too, so I have to be happy with fourth. I made it from ninth to fourth, and finished just three seconds off the podium.”

Later that afternoon in the second race, Silva was much more comfortable with his BMW S 1000 RR. “Of course we still have work to do,” he said. “We have a long break until the next race, and we hope to undertake a few good tests in that time. I hope to find the missing tenths of a second to be closer to the top, and so that we can fight for victory at the next round.”
