Road racing heroes with RR power

More and more road racers on the BMW S 1000 RR

BMW Motorrad Motorsport riders do not only win races and titles at the racetracks of this world. The BMW S 1000 RR also proves it potential on the road racing scene. A third of the field in this season’s International Road Racing Championship (IRRC) is relying on RR power from Munich – and with great success. BMW racers Vincent Lonbois, Sébastien Le Grelle and Didier Grams claimed five of a possible six places on the podium at the opening round in Hengelo.

The first of the major international road racing events takes place this week in Northern Ireland, in the form of the North West 200. Like the legendary Isle of Man TT, the Southern 100, the Ulster GP and the Macau GP, the NW200 counts towards the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy as part of the BMW Combined Road Race Challenge (BMW RRC).

The BMW S 1000 RR’s rise to the top of the road racing scene began in 2014, when Michael Dunlop celebrated a historic treble on the RR at the prestigious Isle of Man TT – exactly 75 years after Georg “Schorsch” Meier’s legendary Senior TT victory on the Isle of Man. Since then, BMW riders have achieved many more successes, including the one-two at the North West 200 and the one-two-three at the Macau GP last year.

“Word has got round of just how good the RR is as a total package for road racing. This is confirmed by the fantastic results that our BMW racers have achieved in recent years,” says Berthold Hauser, Technical Director of BMW Motorrad Motorsport. “The powerful engines, power delivery, electronics systems and robust chassis are among the strengths and advantages of the RR in road racing. The RR is very intuitive and you can be quick on the bike without always riding on the edge, because the bike really helps you. Another advantage for the riders and teams is that the bike is relatively simple to set up for the demands of road racing.”

“One really important factor for our customers is the extensive support they receive from HP Race Support,” Hauser continues. “We are in close contact with all the BMW teams and our support instructions can be implemented universally. We can provide the teams with a basic mapping, which is suitable for everyone and only needs detailed adjustments for each specific bike. The strengths of the RR and support provided by HP Race Support – an ever increasing number of road racers are turning to this overall package.”

BMW road racers could celebrate their next successes at this week’s North West 200. Alastair Seeley, on the Royal Airforce Regular & Reserve BMW S 1000 RR, has his sights on a new record of 16 NW200 wins. Also among the favourites are Tyco BMW riders Ryan Farquhar (five NW200 wins) and Isle of Man legend Ian Hutchinson (two NW200 wins), Michael Dunlop (two NW200 wins / Hawk Racing) and last year’s winner Lee Johnston (East Coast Racing).
