Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, 28/10/2015, Moto 1000 GP / Campeonato Brasileiro de Motovelocidade
Mission “Defend Title” has been completed: BMW racer Matthieu Lussiana won his second championship title in the Brazilian Moto 1000 GP (MT1GP STK GP) before the end of the season. At the penultimate race event of the year in Santa Cruz do Sul, the Frenchman had the perfect weekend on his BMW Motorrad Petronas Racing BMW S 1000 RR – and was crowned champion.
Lussiana catapulted himself back to the top of the 2015 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy. He now leads ahead of Roland Resch and Jordan Szoke. However, the scores are not yet final. At the end of the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy season, all participants will be awarded the bonus points for championship titles, pole positions etc.
Lussiana arrived at the seventh and penultimate stop in southern Brazil with a comfortable lead. However, the Frenchman didn't simply manage this buffer. He was in a class of his own once again on his BMW S 1000 RR, and bagged the full haul of points again. Despite a fall in FP2, the BMW Motorrad Petronas Racing rider set the fastest time in three of four practice sessions and secured pole position in qualifying with a new lap record of 1:23.828 minutes.
Lussiana would have only needed to finish 12th to secure the title win before the final race of the season. But he claimed the crown in proper style: with the win. After the start, the Frenchman was initially in fourth place, but took the lead on lap five and went on to pull away from the field. He was even faster on his RR than he had been in qualifying, and set the fastest lap time in 1:23.593 minutes. After 16 laps and with an advantage of 4.655 seconds, Lussiana crossed the finish line as the winner and 2015 champion.
With pole position, the win and fastest lap, the Frenchman picked up an additional 27 championship points. This saw him extend his number of points to 176. He now has such a big lead that his rival Diego Pierluigi, who finished third in Santa Cruz do Sul, is unable to catch him at the final at the end of November.
“I'm really happy,” said Lussiana. “The weekend didn't start all that well and I fell in the second practice session. But we did a good job, improved the bike and set the pace. In the actual race I had a difficult start. But I kept a cool head and the strategy was perfect. When I took the lead, I was able to pull away at the front. I'm very happy that I became champion again in Brazil.”
In the seven races of the season so far, Lussiana has celebrated five wins on his BMW S 1000 RR and finished second twice. He also rode the fastest lap time in all seven races and started from pole position four times. This is the fourth successive title win for his BMW Motorrad Petronas Racing team: Alex Barros' team were champions with Luciano Ríbodino in 2012 and 2013, and with Lussiana in 2014 and now 2015.
Ríbodino, who fills in for the injured Sebastian Porto in the team, also battled for the podium in Santa Cruz do Sul. He ended up crossing the finish line in fifth place on his RR, just a few tenths of a second off the top three.
The GP Light (MT1GP STK LT) class race was contested by RR rider Luciano Donato (BMW Motorrad Petronas Racing). He finished in 11th place.
The season finale takes place in Curitiba on 29th November.
