“Hicky” wins in BSB.

Maiden win for Smiths Racing in the British Superbike Championship

Memorable day for Smiths Racing: Peter Hickman claimed the first ever victory for the BMW customer team in the British Superbike Championship (BSB). He won race two of the Superbike class (BSB SBK), held in Thruxton this Sunday. Hickman had already taken second on the podium in race one.

In the Superstock class (BSB STK), BMW riders Michael Rutter (Bathams SMT Racing) and Adam Jenkinson (Northern Escalator Installations) stepped onto the rostrum. You can find all results in an overview below.

First P2, then the win

In Sunday’s first race of the Superbike class, Hickman fought at the very front from start to finish on his BMW S 1000 RR. Coming from third on the grid, “Hicky” was leading the pack for quite some time and only dropped back to second in the closing stages. He finished the closely fought race in that podium position, securing the best ever BSB result to date for Smiths Racing – but there was more to come.

In race two, Hickman took the lead halfway through the race. In the close fight at the top, he lost first position for a short while, but then was able to get back into the lead and cross the line as the winner. Tyco BMW Motorrad rider Christian Iddon finished the race in fourth place, missing the podium only by two-tenths of a second. In race one, Iddon was fifth.

After seven rounds of the 2017 BSB season, Hickman is now third in the championship standings while Iddon lies in eighth place. After nine race weekends, the top six in the standings will enter the “showdown” for the BSB title.

In the Superstock class (BSB STK), Adam Jenkinson and Michael Rutter claimed a second and a third place on the podium.

The delight about this success is however overshadowed by Mark Fincham’s fatal accident in the second race of the Superstock class. BMW rider Fincham had competed with team True Heroes Racing at Thruxton. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team at this difficult time.
