On the way to the top

Keeping up with the works riders as a privateer

The elite class visits a legendary racetrack: The FIM World Superbike Championship (WSBK) entourage has pitched its tents in Laguna Seca, California, where races number 17 and 18 of the season will be held this weekend. BMW rider Ayrton Badovini hopes to continue his way to the top and establish himself as the best privateer in the field of strong works teams.

Badovini and the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team have long been a successful team. In 2010, the Italian dominated the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup (STK1000) on the team's RR, won nine of the ten races and was crowned champion before the season was over. In 2011 he was promoted to the elite class WSBK, where he was also convincing on the BMW S 1000 RR. They went their separate ways in 2013, but only temporarily. Badovini is back in the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team and the BMW Motorrad Motorsport family for the 2015 season.

He first had to get used to the 2015 version of the BMW S 1000 RR, but he has since established himself at the front of the field. “You can't compare the bike with the RRs that I have ridden in the past. The world championship regulations have been changed, which naturally means that major components of the bike have changed, for example, in terms of the gearbox. The engine is even more powerful, and the electronics are similar, but not the same as they were,” explained Badovini.

Consistently in the top six

Badovini now consistently rides into the top six – and that is more than remarkable. Since, in theory, the riders of the four thoroughbred works teams should be fighting for the top eight spots among themselves. But, as a privateer, Badovini always keeps up with the works riders successfully.

“I am really pleased since we keep getting faster with the bike and the team is doing a fantastic job,” he confirmed. “The level in the World Superbike Championship is extremely high. But we have kept on improving the bike over the past months and I am convinced that we will be able to fight within the top six in the next races.”

There are five race weekends to go in the 2015 season. Badovini has a clear goal: “We hope we get within reach of the podium at some point. At the moment it is important for us to get into the top five, and then that would be the next step.”

Valuable support from the experts in Munich

The BMW Motorrad Motorsport experts are always on hand at the racetrack, working hard with the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team. “We get so much support from BMW Motorrad Motorsport, and that is extremely important,” stressed Badovini. “After all, we are a small team in this major world championship with a strong field. It is an incredible feeling to know that you have the backing of the strong BMW family.”

Badovini feels he is in with a good chance of forcing his way into the domain of the works teams once again in the races in Laguna Seca: “I like the track; the legendary corkscrew in particular is great fun. And I think that we can get a good result with our BMW S 1000 RR.”
