An overview of the weekend’s racing action

The eighth title of the season for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport community, two wins and two more podiums: That was the total haul of the BMW S 1000 RR riders last weekend.

Jerez de la Frontera in Spain hosted the penultimate round of the 2016 MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and the grand finale of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup (STK1000). The best-placed BMW rider in the WorldSBK was Jordi Torres (Althea BMW Racing Team) with two eighth places. His team-mates Markus Reiterberger and Joshua Brookes (Milwaukee BMW) also achieved top ten results when they finished in ninth and tenth in the first race.

The fans experienced a thrilling finale in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup – with Raffaele De Rosa as champion and a sensational win for Maximilian Scheib. Fifth place in the final race of the year was enough for Althea BMW Racing Team rider De Rosa to claim the title with a lead of three points over his rival Leandro Mercado. Chilean Scheib, runner-up in the FIM CEV Superbike European Championship (CEV), and his Graphbikes Easyrace SBK Team were given a wild card to compete in the STK1000 race in Jerez. In qualifying, Scheib rode a new lap record of 1:42.998 minutes on his BMW S 1000 RR to claim pole position. In the race, he wowed spectators with brilliant manoeuvres and celebrated his first win in this series.

The British Superbike Championship (BSB) held its 2016 season finale in Brands Hatch. In the Superbike class (BSB SBK), Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW Motorrad Racing) finished on the podium: He came second in the first of three Superbike races held on the final weekend. In the final race of the season in the Superstock class (BSB STK), Michael Rutter (Bathams SMT) celebrated his first win in this series since 2011. Rutter also claimed the fastest race lap on his RR. Runner-up in the championship, Ian Hutchinson (Tyco BMW Motorrad Racing), finished the season with another podium: He finished third. Champion Taylor Mackenzie (Buildbase BMW Motorrad), who had already wrapped up the title at the penultimate round, finished the race in sixth place. In the 12 races held this season, the BMW S 1000 RR riders claimed no less than ten victories.
